Here's a great show that fans of time loop stories will love, Russian Doll
Russian Doll is a great Netflix show that is 8 episodes long in the first season. It's a comedy drama that's willing to attract nearly anyone and it's only 20-30 minutes long.
SPOILER ALERT!
The show talks about Nadia being stuck in a time loop and trying to figure out ways to get out of it. She continues to do things different from how she did in the past. But there are many plot devices used that also separate it from stories that have used time loops in the past, like Groundhog Day.The first plot device is the character Alan. Nadia meets Alan in an elevator which is falling down. She doesn't care, but she sees the same reaction from Alan. She asks Alan why he's not afraid and he says that he doesn't care, because he always dies.
So Nadia and Alan share similarities, what else can the show do. They die at the same time, so they try to keep each other safe. Things used to be disappearing, and they all come back when they cling on to hope.
In one episode, Nadia talks about space-time as being the fourth dimension to Alan. In the last episode, at one point we are the episode is introduced with multiple versions occurring at the same time, just like a multiverse.
That's when the final twist is presented in the last episode. In one universe, Nadia doesn't know Alan despite their repeated encounters. In order to save Nadia from dying, Alan explains to Nadia that she had told him before about parallel universes. Right now, Alan is trying to help Nadia, while in another parallel universe, Nadia is trying to help Alan. Without helping each other, they won't be able to survive. Sounds like a video game, right?
The ending is ambiguous, making the show a bit complex and when I saw it I kept rethinking it. This is like the comics, DC:Rebirth. "Natasha Lyonne" creates a sparking performance, assisted by "Charlie Barnett".
Russian doll bears similarities with Mr. Robot. Mr. Robot was a great at first, but a bit confusing. The first season just laid the building blocks for the next two. This is why the show succeeded because it looked good at first, even if confusing, but it uses shots from the first and second season to properly explain the third season. Maybe Russian doll might do the same.
So will this turn out to be as great as Mr. Robot? We'll have to wait and see, only time will tell
That's it for now, SkateLane Booting Out
