I started reading the comic series ever since I heard that that an adaptation of it was being made for TV in FX. "Y" is the name of the TV series, and the "starting cast" has been confirmed. Some characterizations have been changed, with either some original characters or some characters based on the series with their names changed. Some major characters are yet to be casted. "Y" is still filming with an unofficial release date of 2020. An official date has not been made. So anything as of now is still just plain guesswork.
I'm not sure I'll be appreciating the TV show as much as the graphic novice. Y: The Last Man the comic book series has a lot of important dialogues, so if it has to reconstructed in a TV show, then it it has to proper give time and effort to doing that. It has to include the dialogues, the storylines, the amazons, the politics, the melodrama etc. But primarily it has to properly replicate the capuchin monkey, the setting(s), the science fiction, and the reasoning shown in the story.
For a short number of 60 issues, Y: The Last Man delivers a lot of content. I was reading The Walking Dead previously and this has some similarities. One thing that this series has in common with The Walking Dead is that the character's life usually passes based on the release date (1 month later). From 2002-2008 in 60 issues, Y: The Last Man passes through 5 years of Yorick's life. I mentioned 2002 because the realism that you feel is rare.
I have also been seeing the AMC series "The Walking Dead", which has been a pretty good adaptation of the comic series. I had read The Walking Dead comic book series up to issues 65 or 70, which is already around season 5 or 6 into the show. Anyone who had read it first might not appreciate the changes done to the cast, or the plot, but I actually like it. I saw the show first though. I'm not sure if it will be the same for the adaptation of Y: The Last Man, but I hope it will be faithful to the storyline.
In Y:The Last Man, "Yorick" and his Capuchin monkey "Ampersand" are lost in a world full of females. What can they do. How is this a post apocalyptic world, or is it? With one male lead and an entire cast of females around him, what do you make of this? Are there a set of main characters who travel with "Yorick"? There are so many questions to ask. I can promise you this, "Yorick" is the one of the most fun driven protagonist I've encountered, and I think he might be queer as well. "Barry Keoghan" is the actor casted as Y. The monkey also appears in the show.
The funny thing about "Yorick" as the main protagonist is that despite him being a male, the series is more focused on feminism. Feminism is brought up in nearly every issue in the series, in a way that many different characters are introduced just for portraying feminism in a different light. I found myself learning new facts, things I never knew and was grateful for in fact.
For non-readers of the comic book series, just know that the series was realistically portrayed for a timeline that was 2002. So the rise of Feminism from 2002 to 2020 has to count in the TV series, unless the setting is back in 2002. The series goes deep into quotes, history, philosophy, references etc as well, so whatever changed from 2002 to 2020 can be used. Not to mention all the LGBTQIA+ folks for 2 decades back.
