Movie Review: iBoy

“iBoy” (2017) starts with Tom trying to make contact with Lucy. Tom Harvey is in school and is quite a loner. No-one talks to him. Lucy is the only person that talks with him, even though she is mocked for it. He appreciates her for talking with him and wants to help her out at night with homework. One night, Tom walks to Lucy’s home and gets shot in the head.

“iBoy” (2017) draws parallels with Murphy from “Robocop” (1987), or even “Robocop” (2014), and makes it more modern. The main difference is in “Robocop” they make him a cyborg after an accident because science fiction movies were popular while bringing up hidden political issues, while in “iBoy” he becomes a superhero magically when he is shot because movies with superheroes in them are more popular nowadays.

Another difference between “Robocop” and “iBoy” is that Tom gains superhuman traits by getting shot in “iBoy”, with no cyborg recovery program. Does that mean anyone can become a superhero by being shot? No, because a lot of people do get shot, but they don’t turn into superheroes. Or if they do turn into superheroes, it’s a bit of daily news that has been hidden from us. So it must be in his DNA. We live in a world of movies where superheroes are so popular nowadays that the classic words science fiction and fantasy do not mean much anymore. I think a cyborg recovery program was issued in this movie as well, but it’s in its experimental stages. I see this movie as a prequel to Robocop.

The movie turns dark five minutes into the movie. Lucy is being raped by a group of masked kids. Horrifying act, such a horrifying act. Tom was coming to help her with her homework but he witnesses the gruesome act and gets shot in the process. Pretty much describes how “gloomy” the movie is going to be. Tom (“Bill Milner”) is instantly admitted to the hospital, and the screen goes blank. He is in a coma, and after he wakes up, the doctor tells him that some pieces from his phone are infused inside his head. The only people who come to visit him are his grandmother (“Miranda Richardson”) and Lucy (“Maisie Williams”).

Suddenly Tom can access anything that is connected to the internet or radio signals, which is crazy because we now live in the internet world and most items we use can be controlled by radio signals. Being able to control that would imply total control of the universe. Which would indirectly make a science fiction ability, a superhuman ability as well, if you are interested in all that stuff. Tom adopts the alias iBoy so that no-one would know he gets has gifts. He now has the power to contact each and everyone using his iBoy persona. The things he can do, you have to watch the movie to witness them.

The news of his popularity catches on in the social media platform. Either Tom or someone else creates a social media platform just for iBoy. iBoy is a social media platform where people post their problems. By problems, I mean real problems. If someone attacks us, we post it. If we witness a crime, we post it. If we want to thank iBoy for taking care of our problems, we post it. And so on. That’s the power of social media. We are so addicted to it that we can get wiped out just by targeting it. Social Media Addiction is a real threat, and we live in that world. Do we post problems like “my mom kicked me”? I’m not spoiling if that happened or if it was just a random thought.

But “iBoy” is more than just a science fiction movie or a dark movie. “iBoy” is more of a romance movie. Tom has a magical crush on Lucy. It’s quite obvious. He talks to her using his alias iBoy, yet she prefers to talk with Tom. She is recuperating from the rape attack and is not going to school. He takes care of every problem in the city for her, making the city a better place. He even empties the kingpin Ellman’s bank account, to send a message.

Tom finds out that he is not that interested in being iBoy anymore. Tom is not really on a vendetta. He wants to make sure Ellman (“Rory Kinnear”) pays for everything sure, but Ellman is just one piece of the puzzle. He just wants to protect Lucy from everyone so that she can go back to school. And given that she is haunted by a lot of events, she wants him by her side. Tom is fine with filling up Ellman’s bank account to protect Lucy. That could have been used as a great opportunity.

“iBoy” has a lot of unused potentials, and it keeps it from reaching its best potential. iBoy is a cross between “Robocop” and the TV show “Black Mirror”. It may be a sci-fi romance movie, yet it is not a cliche movie. I do not classify superheroes as a gender, which I will repeat in every review. Also, Ellman should have been more menacing. In the end, the movie was over before it was turning out to be campy. The movie should have been neo-noir.

It’s mystical. The movie was looking gorgeous indeed. The way iBoy was manipulating all the social media around everyone was one feat that makes you think what all could he do with his mind. Could he switch on the tv in every house? Well yeah. All that he needs to do is learn martial arts.

iBoy is a definite 3/4 recommend.
